Dr Johanna Dups-Bergmann

Johanna Dups-Bergmann is an Australian veterinarian with more than two decades of experience working across infectious disease research, veterinary epidemiology, and One Health. Johanna completed her PhD at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness, where she investigated the transmission and pathogenesis of henipaviruses. Her work combined BSL-4 pathogenesis studies and molecular research with field sampling of bats, providing experience across both laboratory- and field-based infectious disease research. She subsequently shifted her focus towards the host, investigating humoral immune responses to malaria infection. To bring these different perspectives together, Johanna completed a Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAppEpi) through the Australian National University, based at the Western Australian Department of Health. This provided a human health perspective on epidemiology and highlighted the opportunities and sensitivities involved in working across different health sectors. She then applied this multidisciplinary training as a veterinary epidemiologist with the Western Australian Department of Agriculture, where she investigated animal disease outbreaks and developed and implemented surveillance systems, with a particular interest in diseases of zoonotic significance. In 2020, Johanna returned to research in Germany, joining the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut and working across a range of One Health projects, including harmonising surveillance across human and animal health sectors and developing One Health cohort studies that integrate investigations and sampling across the human–animal–environment interface. Johanna is now at the Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH), where she continues to work on One Health cohorts and integrated surveillance, bringing together her experience in veterinary medicine, infectious disease research, epidemiology, and public health to better understand health threats across the human–animal–environment interface.
