Dr Elias Eger, a research associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Ecology of Antimicrobial Resistance led by Prof. Katharina Schaufler, received the DZIF Doctoral Award from the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM) on June 2, 2024.
After studying pharmacy, Elias Eger began his doctoral research in 2018 at the University of Greifswald with the thesis titled "Investigation of One Health-related high-risk clonal lineages of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli and carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae reveals key factors for their success." He continued this work at the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel from 2022 onwards. This valuable scientific contribution on antimicrobial resistance was awarded summa cum laude.
Using state-of-the-art bioinformatics approaches and comprehensive in vitro and in vivo functional studies, Elias Eger analyzed genomic surveillance data of multidrug-resistant E. coli isolates from Sub-Saharan Africa during his PhD. He also investigated bacterial virulence in a high-risk foodborne E. coli clone through functional genomics and phenotyping, and explored evolutionary pathways underlying resistance development against a novel drug combination. Elias Eger published his research findings in several high-ranking journals and regularly presented his excellent research results at international conferences.
Since completing his PhD, we are delighted that Elias Eger has enriched the HIOH as a postdoc in the externally funded project "MDR-Dekol," which focuses on the gut decolonization of multidrug-resistant E. coli and K. pneumoniae clones.
We congratulate Elias Eger on this well-deserved honour!
