Prof. Katharina Schaufler, Head of the Department of ‘Epidemiology and Ecology of Antimicrobial Resistance’ at HIOH, has been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Partnership on One Health Antimicrobial Resistance (EUP OHAMR). In this role, she brings her scientific expertise to a European consortium dedicated to combating antimicrobial resistance and providing strategic impetus for research and innovation in this key health sector.
Founded in 2025 and co-funded by the European Commission, the consortium has an ambitious goal: to strengthen research in the One Health sector in order to improve the surveillance of resistant pathogens, optimise the diagnosis and treatment of infections, and reduce the use of antimicrobial agents and the spread of resistance through effective preventive measures. Over the next ten years, around 250 million euros are to be channelled into research and innovation projects to combat antimicrobial resistance. In doing so, the initiative is sending a strong signal in the fight against one of the greatest health challenges of our time.
The EUP OHAMR is not limited solely to funding new projects. A further focus lies on establishing sustainable research structures, improving the use and networking of research data, and translating scientific findings from basic research into concrete applications. In the long term, the initiative aims to contribute to the development of new approaches to the treatment and prevention of resistant infections, whilst simultaneously closing existing gaps in knowledge regarding antimicrobial resistance. In terms of content, the EUP OHAMR thus ties in directly with the work of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), whose activities concluded in May 2025.
As a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, Katharina Schaufler will advise the EUP OHAMR on scientific and strategic issues relating to the One Health concept. In addition, the 16 members of the Advisory Board will provide feedback from the scientific community and will be available for workshops and networking activities. All members are initially appointed for a period of three years, with the possibility of a one-time extension.
The only other German member of the EUP OHAMR Advisory Board is also a researcher at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). Prof. Rolf Müller is the Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), an HZI site in collaboration with Saarland University.
