Debut Visit

HIOH’s Scientific Advisory Board Meets in Greifswald

HIOH is advised by nine renowned international experts from various disciplines, whose perspectives enrich the strategic and technical orientation of the institute:

  • Prof Dr Thea Kølsen Fischer, physician and public health specialist (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), spokesperson of the Advisory Board
  • Prof Dr Teresa M. Coque, pharmacist and microbiologist (Instituto Ramón y Cajal de Investigación Sanitaria – IRYCIS, Madrid, Spain)
  • Prof Dr Heinz Feldmann, virologist and expert on highly infectious viruses (National Institutes of Health, Hamilton, Montana, USA)
  • Prof Dr Dr h.c. mult. Thomas Mettenleiter, molecular biologist and virologist (One Health High Level Expert Panel – OHHLEP, Greifswald, Germany)
  • Prof Dr Hendrik Poinar, evolutionary geneticist and anthropologist (McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada)
  • Prof Dr Oliver Pybus, biologist and specialist in evolution and infectious diseases (University of Oxford, UK)
  • Prof Dr Simone Sommer, ecologist and expert in conservation genomics and ecological health (University of Ulm, Germany)
  • Prof Dr Andrea Winkler, medical specialist in neurology (Technical University of Munich, Germany)
  • Dr Alpha Kabinet Keita, physician and infectious disease specialist (Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry, Guinea)

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) has been supporting the HIOH since the end of 2023. At least once a year, its members meet with the institute’s department heads and research teams to discuss current developments, offer scientific guidance, and contribute to the strategic direction of the HIOH’s research activities. Additional, shorter meetings are held as needed to delve deeper into specific topics. Following three virtual meetings—focusing, among other things, on antimicrobial resistance as well as virus ecology and evolution—the SAB members visited Greifswald in April 2025 for the first time to gain a personal impression of the institute and its working environment. Their overall assessment was thoroughly positive: They praised the institute’s clear scientific profile as well as the team’s strong commitment – and shared valuable impulses for its future development.
