Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute
Founded in 1910 by Friedrich Loeffler, the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI) is Germany’s Federal Research Institute for Animal Health and an independent higher federal authority under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity. Its headquarters are located in Greifswald–Island Riems, home to one of the world’s most advanced facilities for infectious disease research. With state-of-the-art laboratories and animal facilities up to biosafety level 4, FLI provides unique capacities for studying highly pathogenic animal diseases and zoonoses.
FLI conducts both basic and applied research to protect animal health and welfare and to safeguard humans from zoonotic infections. Its work includes the operation of national and international reference laboratories and the development of diagnostics, prevention measures and evidence-based disease control strategies, making the FLI a key partner in One Health research.
